The names
of William Shakespears and Robert Burns are well known in the world.
Robert
Burns was born in Scotland in family of a small farmer. He spent much of his
time helping his father on their farm every day. From his father he learnd to
love and understand other people. From his mother he learnd old-country-side
songs and folk-tales. Robert’s father was poor, but he wanted to give his
children a good education. Robert began to write poems when he was 15. He
described with love and understanding everyday life and people. Soon the
readers received his first book of
poems. Then he made a book of old-scottish folk-songs. He wrote new words for
many of the melodies. Here are the words of one of them:
Should auld acguaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acguaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang Syne?
Chorus: For auld lang Syne, my dear,
For auld lang Syne.
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang Syne.
And here’s a hand my trusty friend,
And give a hand of thine:
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang Syne.
Robert
wrote a lot of poems. They are full of life. His poems and words are still
known and loved by millions of people.
William Shakespeare was a writer and poet. He
wrote a lot of comedies, tragedies and dramas for theatre: such as ‘‘Hamlet’’,
‘‘Romeo and Juliet’’, ‘‘Much Ado about nothing’’, ‘‘Twelfth Night’’, ‘‘King
Lear’’, ‘‘Othello’’ and many others.
William Shakespeare was born on the 23d of April, 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon in a family
of a glover.
The English school was a difficult place of
that time. Pupils had to be at school at 6 o’clock in the morning and school
days were long. In the holidays William Shakespeare went to the river Avon to
have a real rest. Groups of actors visited Stratford from time to time. William Shakespeare watched them and decided
to become an actor. When he was 21, he went to London. He became an actor there
and began to write plays. He wrote 37 wonderful plays. Shakespeare’s heroes are
still on the stage. We go to the theatre to meet them again and again.
